Are you looking for cruise tips for Virgin Voyages first-timers? Here are 15 first-timer tips to help you make the most of your experience!
1. Book Early
Deposit your preferred stateroom and itinerary well in advance. The best price happens when you book early. Some promotions can be applied later if the sailing is not paid in full. Rarely are future promotions a better price than booking early. Trust me, as a travel advisor, I check them often for my guests!
2. Explore the Virgin Voyages App
Download the Virgin Voyages app as soon as you deposit your voyage. Add your reservation number and get started on the check-in process. Most of the items will not be available to book immediately, but this will give you a head start on learning to navigate the app. Dining reservations and excursions can’t be booked until 60 days prior to departure, 120 for Rock Stars. The best part of starting early? The countdown!
Note: the app can be very glitchy. It’s not you. It’s them. NEVER offload the app while sailing. Go to Sailor Services for help.
3. Pack Smart
Remember, cruise ship rooms are not that big! Unless you’re a rock star. Don’t overpack! Now is not the time to bust out that outfit you “might” want to wear! From personal experience, I’m most comfortable in my tried-and-true favorite outfits, which have some occasional flare. But for the most part, it’s the same stuff I wear at home. Make sure to pack for themed nights, which include Scarlet Night, the PJ Party, 80’s Themed workouts, and, of course, your matching group shirts!
4. Understand the All-Inclusive Package
Know what’s covered in your fare—WiFi, dining, and group workouts are included along with your basic beverages. It’s not really all-inclusive as we would typically describe an all-inclusive resort. On board Virgin Voyages, you’ll pay for all alcoholic and specialty beverages and coffees as well as fresh juices and smoothies from the gym. You will also pay for excursions, some onboard activities, and any spa services you may want.
Can you get on the ship and not spend anything else? Yes, in theory. However, most guests should budget for beverages and activities.
5. Dress Code – Hint: There isn’t one!
Casual and chic attire is the norm; save space for a few nice outfits for upscale dining. Don’t forget your themed attire if that’s your thing! But keep in mind, on Virgin Voyages, where what YOU want! There is no formal night or dress code. Just be you and be comfortable!
6. Book Your Dining Reservations as soon as they open
As soon as your reservation window opens, log in to the app and make your dining reservation. If you’re traveling with friends and want to make reservations with them. Link your accounts together before you’re ready to make reservations. You cannot make reservations for more guests than are linked in your app.
Reservations can be a little finicky. Don’t panic. Get what you can and know that you can make adjustments on the ship. I recommend doing this the first day to ensure you get to eat where you want!
Use the app to book specialty dining experiences 60 days in advance—120 for Rock Stars.
7. Plan Your Shore Things
Select and reserve shore excursions (Shore Things) before they sell out. Some excursions are more popular than others and will sell out. If you’re unsure, book what you think you want. You can always cancel it and get a full refund before boarding the ship. Your credit card will be charged as soon as you book the shore excursions.
8. Pack Meds!
You never know what you may need at sea. Many different types of medications can be purchased on the ship either in port, in the gift shop, or through the ship doctor. However, it can be helpful to have what you need on hand. Pack your typical things like pain meds, tums, and basic cold medications. You’ll also want to pack motion sickness remedies, just in case. Bonine or Dramaine can be helpful. I rarely get sick at sea, but the few times I have, I’ve been grateful to have these meds on hand!
9. Budget for Extras
While almost everything is included, you’ll have to pay for spa services, tattoos, and premium drinks, which cost extra. Consider purchasing Splash of Romance as soon as you book your cruise, which includes early boarding to the ship, delightful treats in your room, a bottle of champagne, and a 3-hour thermal spa pass!
10. Take Advantage of Wellness Offerings
Join complimentary group fitness classes or enjoy the onboard spa facilities. The most popular class is the Budgee aerobics. Sign up when you get on the ship to avoid missing out. This one fills quickly!
11. Stay Hydrated
Bring a reusable water bottle; hydration stations are available throughout the ship. Virgin Voyages believes in sustainability. You won’t find any single-use plastics onboard. You can purchase one in the gift shop if you forget your water bottle.
12. WiFi Connectivity
Stream your devices using the complimentary WiFi, but expect some limitations depending on coverage areas. Basic wifi is included. If you want premium wifi for streaming, you’ll pay additionally for that.
13. Attend the Sailaway Party
Join this exciting kickoff—it’s an onboard experience you won’t want to miss. Rock Star guests can experience this from Richards Rooftop. Your own private retreat sailing into vacation.
14. Explore onboard Entertainment
Check schedules for shows and events; they’re included and provide great onboard entertainment. Don’t forget to sign up for the Grogg Walk or Bingo with the Diva.
15. Meet Your Fellow Sailors
Join in on the fun and get to know other sailors. My favorite way to do this is to sign up for the Grogg Walk on night one. You’ll get to know the rest of the group by playing interactive drinking games and exploring the ship. (non-alcoholic beverages are available). For the remainder of your days onboard, you’ll see friends around, which is an extra element of fun!
