Are you planning your Disney World vacation and feeling overwhelmed with the options? Are you not sure how to navigate Animal Kingdom?  Disney can often leave guests, both first-timers and repeaters, overwhelmed.  This Animal Kingdom touring plan will help ensure your day’s success!  Let’s get started!Disney's Animal Kingdom park touring plan

Animal Kingdom is a great easy park to enjoy.  It’s more than a zoo, so please don’t skip it thinking so.  You will find animals mixed in with the many attractions Animal Kingdom has to offer, but the entertainment and immersive experiences make it more than a zoo.

Animal Kingdom can be completed in one day, but if you’d prefer to spend two days here, you can add on behind the scene tours and lounge about the many cozy niches and restaurants.

What You Need to Know About Genie+ and Lightning Lane Before Visiting Animal Kingdom

Genie+ is a paid service at Walt Disney World that replaced the old FastPass system and works a bit differently.

Genie+ Guide

Genie+ can be purchased each day of your trip and must be purchased for each person in your party who wants to ride with Genie+.

Attractions are selected on the official Walt Disney World app (My Disney Experience) with a specific return time when you can join the Lightning Lane line.

Lightning Lane is a separate lane at participating attractions that allows guests to skip the standby line (regular queue).

All guests who purchase Genie+ are eligible to select their first Genie+ attraction at 7:00 am.  My Disney Experience account Genie+

Pro Tip: It’s best to purchase Genie+ by 6:45 am so you are ready to select at 7:00 am.

You can make a second selection either 2 hours after park opening or after you use your first Genie selection – whichever comes first.

For a complete list of Genie+ attractions and priorities visit our Genie + Priorities – Animal Kingdom Attractions post.

Some of the more popular rides in each park are not included with your Genie+ purchase.  However, you can purchase Lightning Lane access separately.  These few attractions are called “Individual Lightning Lanes”. Confused yet?  We know, the names make it extra tricky! But we promise, it will all come together for you!

Lightning Lane Animal Kingdom Individual Lightning Lanes can be purchased, in your My Disney Experience app, as a per person, per ride add on – for each ride offered.

Those rides are: (Subject to change)

  • Animal Kingdom – Flight of Passage
  • Magic Kingdom – TRON and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
  • Epcot – Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind
  • Hollywood Studios – Rise of the Resistance

Guests of Walt Disney World hotels can purchase Individual Lightning Lanes at 7:00 am. All other guests can make a selection at the official park opening time.  Just one more reason guests should stay at one of Disney Worlds many resorts.

Prices change based on park and date attending.

Virtual Queue

There are currently no virtual queue options at Animal Kingdom.

Virtual queue is another way to ride some attractions. Everyone can join a virtual queue at 7:00 am or 1:00 pm, but you can’t join both times for the same attraction.

Joining the virtual queue at 7:00 am may be done from anywhere. To join the 1:00 pm virtual queue, you must be scanned into that park to join the queue.

Once your group is called for the queue, you will be able to get in line for that attraction. You have a one hour window to return to the attraction to ride.

Current rides that have Virtual Queue:

Please note: These rides do not offer a regular standby line at this time. The only way to ride these attractions is by virtual queue or purchase an individual Lightning Lane.  Subject to change.

  • Animal Kingdom – None
  • Magic Kingdom – Tron
  • Epcot – Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind
  • Hollywood Studios – None

Tips for Success:

Always set an alarm on your phone for the time you can pick another Genie+ selection! The app tells you exactly what time you can choose the next one.

Check the app each time you scan in for a ride in case you can select a new ride.

Other Entertainment

Animal Kingdom has a few offerings for entertainment throughout the day.  Use the app to find show times and schedule any of the seated shows into your touring plan as they fit.  A few favorites are Festival of the Lion King, (I wouldn’t miss this one,) and Finding Nemo: The Big Blue and Beyond.  The remaining entertainment are small pop up options like the Harambe Village Acrobats, Discovery Island Drummers Flotilla and the Viva Gala Street Band. The times are listed in your app but you’re more likely to happen upon them rather than schedule them into your day.

Animal Kingdom does not currently offer any nighttime entertainment options. The park tends to close around dark and makes for an easy evening to catch up on some much needed sleep.

I'm addicted to Disney, traveling and exploring the world with my family, and have a passion for helping families experience the magic of travel. My home is filled with love and chaos, 2 crazy girls, 2 large dogs, and the most spectacular architect and Disney Cast Member I call my husband. We live in Florida and spend our weekends playing at Orlando's many theme parks and visiting the beach. In 2015, after helping numerous families plan their vacations to various Disney Destinations, I started a blog to answer all of the many travel questions I received daily. In 2016, the blog grew into a travel agency, and Love of the Magic Vacations was born. With a team of nearly 20, we spend our days creating family vacations around the world. What started as a blog is now a full service, worldwide vacation destination planning service. I create custom itineraries for each of my clients that not only meets but exceeds expectations. There is no greater gift than making memories while sharing the world and its cultures with your kids.
