Beyond the Cup: More Than Meets the Fjords

You Came for the Futbol
Two words: Erling Haaland. While Norway didn’t make it to the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the world fell in love with this team, their traditions, and that hair!
After waiting 28 years to make their way back to the World Cup, Norway definitely made the return count. They cruised through qualifying with a perfect 8-0 record, scoring 37 goals along the way with 16 of those coming from Erling Haaland (the hair!). They didn’t slow down once the tournament started. After making it through the group stage, Norway picked up their first-ever World Cup knockout win with a 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire, then followed it up by taking down Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16, sending them to their first-ever World Cup quarter-final. Haaland wrapped up the tournament with seven goals, while Norway’s historic run eventually came to an end with a 2-1 extra-time loss to England in the quarter-finals.
Norway left us wanting more after the World Cup, and luckily we think the country has plenty of surprises still waiting for you! Follow along as we take you beyond the fjords and discover why Norway has become a destination we love sharing with our clients here at Love of the Magic Vacations!

The Capital & Beyond
Capital
Oslo is one of those cities that manages to mix old-world history, modern Scandinavian style, and a pretty great food scene without taking itself too seriously. Spend the day wandering around the city, popping into the Royal Palace, checking out the Oslo Opera House, or learning a little Norwegian history at the Viking Ship Museum. When hunger strikes, Oslo has plenty of options; from cozy cafés and traditional Norwegian dishes to buzzing spots like Mathallen Oslo, where you can grab a little bit of everything. Then, as the day winds down, settle in with a drink by the waterfront, take in the Oslofjord views, and enjoy the city at its wonderfully laid-back pace.
Coastal
Norway’s coastal cities have a pretty unbeatable seaside vibe, with colorful waterfronts, dramatic scenery, and some seriously good seafood along the way. Spend a day wandering the harbor in Bergen, checking out the colorful Bryggen, or head farther north to Tromsø for a taste of life above the Arctic Circle. And if you really want to get off the beaten path, the fishing villages of the Lofoten Islands are hard to beat. When it comes to food, this is where Norway really shines! The freshest caught cod, king crab, smoked salmon, and whatever else was pulled from the water that day. Grab a table overlooking the harbor, order something local, and settle in. Take the time to really sink into coastal life in Norway.
Mountains
Norway’s mountains are the kind of place that will literally stop you in your tracks. Think towering peaks, deep valleys, rushing waterfalls, and hiking trails with pretty incredible views around just about every corner. In the west, take on iconic spots like Trolltunga or Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), or skip the serious hiking and simply enjoy a scenic drive through the mountains and fjords. Farther north, the Lofoten Islands offer a totally different backdrop, with jagged peaks rising straight out of the sea and tiny fishing villages scattered along the coast. After a day of exploring, find a cozy spot, grab a local beer or something warm, and enjoy the fact that you’ve more than earned that view!
Countryside
Norway’s countryside is where you can really take a breath, slow down, and see a quieter side of the country. Think winding roads, tiny villages, open farmland, and scenery that will fill your camera roll in minutes. Wander through places like Flåm or Geiranger, where colorful little houses, waterfalls, and mountains seem to be around every corner, or just take the scenic route and see where the road takes you. Along the way, stop at a local farm, café, or cider house and try a few Norwegian favorites like brown cheese, fresh-baked bread, or locally made cider. Then find a cozy place to settle in for the night, enjoy a slow dinner, and take in the view. Sometimes in Norway, having nowhere to be is exactly the point.
Most Underrated
The Helgeland Coast is one of those places that makes you wonder how more people haven’t discovered it yet. Up along Norway’s northern coast, you’ll find dramatic mountains, tiny islands, clear blue water, and little fishing villages that feel a world away from the usual tourist spots. Spend the day island hopping, hiking up to Torghatten, the famous mountain with a giant hole right through it, or cruising along the scenic Kystriksveien coastal road and stopping whenever the view looks too good to pass up. Keep an eye out for the Seven Sisters mountain range, local wildlife, and those picture-perfect seaside communities along the way. Then, when the day starts to wind down, grab some fresh seafood, find a spot by the water, and just take it all in. If you’re looking for a quieter, more off-the-beaten-path side of Norway, this is definitely one to put on the list.
What to See, Taste & Experience
Eat This
If there’s one thing you definitely shouldn’t leave Norway without trying, it’s fresh Norwegian salmon. Smoked, cured, grilled, or simply piled onto a piece of good bread, it’s the kind of food that doesn’t need much fuss to be amazing. But definitely don’t stop there. Try king crab if you’re heading north, fresh-caught cod along the coast, or fårikål, Norway’s cozy national dish made with slow-cooked lamb and cabbage. And then there’s brunost, Norway’s famous brown cheese with a slightly sweet, caramel-like flavor that’s especially good on a warm waffle with a little jam. Add a local cider or Norwegian beer, and you’ll be hooked on the local cuisine.
Get Immersed
Get out and experience Norway the way the locals do! Spend the day learning how to make traditional Norwegian dishes, visit a local farm, wander through a neighborhood market, or sit down for a meal with the people who call Norway home. Food is a huge part of Norwegian culture, but so are the traditions, outdoor lifestyle, and simple everyday moments that make up life here. Try your hand at baking lefse, learn about traditional fishing and farming practices, or join locals for a hike followed by coffee and something sweet. Slow down, embrace friluftsliv (the Norwegian love of spending time outdoors), and give yourself permission to follow the local rhythm. The more you step away from the tourist checklist and into everyday Norwegian life, the more Norway starts to feel less like a place you’re visiting and more like a place you’re experiencing. Plan just enough, but not too much.
Take the Kids
Norway is a pretty fantastic destination for families, especially if your kids would rather be outside exploring than sitting in a museum all day. Here, sightseeing can feel more like an adventure, with fjord cruises, scenic train rides, waterfalls, wildlife, and plenty of space to just run around. Take the Flåm Railway through some seriously beautiful mountain scenery, hop on a fjord cruise, or dive into Viking history in a way that feels more like a story than a history lesson. In Oslo, kids can explore the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology or wander through the open-air Norsk Folkemuseum. And when everyone needs a break, grab an ice cream, find a playground, or just head outside and enjoy the scenery. Honestly, in Norway, you don’t have to over-plan the fun; the fun will find you!
Adventure Time
If you’re up for an adventure, hiking to Trolltunga (Troll’s Tongue) in Norway definitely belongs on your list! This famous rock formation sticks out over Lake Ringedalsvatnet, giving you incredible views of turquoise water, towering mountains, and Norway’s rugged landscape. Getting there takes a pretty challenging full-day hike, but the views along the way and that iconic spot overlooking the lake make it worth the effort. It’s the kind of adventure that gets your heart pumping, gives you a whole new appreciation for Norway’s outdoors, and leaves you with a story to tell long after you’re home!
Beyond the Match
If you want a sports experience beyond soccer, head to Norway and catch a live bandy match. Think hockey, but played on a much larger ice rink with a ball instead of a puck. Players race across the ice with curved sticks, making for a fast-paced game full of action. Catching a match gives you a glimpse into Norway’s winter sports culture, with passionate fans and a lively local atmosphere. It’s a fun way to experience a different side of Norwegian life while cheering alongside the locals.
Skip It
One thing to skip when traveling to Norway is sticking to the big tourist restaurants right along the waterfront, especially in places like Bergen. You’ll often pay more for a meal that feels pretty standard when there’s so much local food worth exploring. Instead, wander into neighborhood spots, check out local fish markets, or look for a cozy café serving freshly made fish soup or traditional Norwegian dishes. And while Norway’s famous for its salmon, don’t stop there. Try local specialties like brown cheese, fårikål (lamb and cabbage stew), or fresh seafood from a small coastal town. Sometimes the best food experiences happen when you step a little away from the main tourist trail.
Worth the Splurge
If you’re going to splurge anywhere in Norway, make it a private yacht experience through the fjords paired with a stay at a boutique hotel or a tucked-away waterfront lodge. Imagine cruising past towering cliffs, tiny coastal villages, and cascading waterfalls, with the freedom to slow down and take in the scenery without the crowds. Back on land, trade the big chain hotels for intimate accommodations that feel connected to the landscape, whether that’s a design-forward retreat overlooking the water or a cozy hideaway nestled in the mountains. Add in fresh seafood, locally inspired meals, and a few unplanned stops along the way, and you’ve got the kind of Norwegian adventure that’s less about checking off landmarks and more about experiencing the place in a way you’ll remember long after you’re home.
Love of the Magic Suggests
For a luxury winter adventure in Norway, think glass-roofed igloos, boutique Arctic lodges, and private excursions beneath the Northern Lights. Head north to Tromsø for dog sledding through snowy landscapes, reindeer encounters with Sámi guides, and a chance to catch the aurora away from the crowds. Add a scenic fjord cruise, a private snowmobile adventure, and cozy evenings enjoying fresh Arctic seafood by the fire. For a little extra magic, venture into the Lofoten Islands, where snow-dusted fishing villages and dramatic mountain backdrops make winter feel straight out of a storybook.
