Visiting Walt Disney World is an exciting adventure but the planning and navigating of the parks can often leave guests, first-timers, and repeaters, overwhelmed.  Make sure you have a Magic Kingdom plan in place to ensure your day’s success!

Magic Kingdom presents its own unique challenges. With its abundance of attractions, navigating this park requires careful planning to help maximize all you can do in a day.

Due to Magic Kingdom’s sheer size, we suggest allocating two days to fully enjoy everything Magic Kingdom has to offer.

What You Need to Know About Genie+ and Lightning Lane Before Visiting Magic Kingdom

Genie+

Genie+ is a paid service at Walt Disney World that replaced the old FastPass system and works a bit differently.

Genie+ Guide

Genie+ can be purchased each day of your trip and must be purchased for each person in your party who wants to ride with Genie+.

Attractions are selected on the official Walt Disney World app (My Disney Experience) with a specific return time when you can join the Lightning Lane line.

Lightning Lane is a separate lane at participating attractions that allows guests to skip the standby line (regular queue).

All guests who purchase Genie+ are eligible to select their first Genie+ attraction at 7:00 am.  My Disney Experience account Genie+

Pro Tip: It’s best to purchase Genie+ by 6:45 am so you are ready to select at 7:00 am.

You can make a second selection either 2 hours after park opening or after you use your first Genie selection – whichever comes first.

For a complete list of Genie+ attractions and priorities visit our Genie + Priorities – Magic Kingdom Attractions. For the Magic Kingdom touring plan, please continue reading.

Lightning Lane

Some of the more popular rides in each park are not included with your Genie+ purchase.  However, you can purchase Lightning Lane access separately.  These few attractions are called “Individual Lightning Lanes”. Confused yet?  We know, the names make it extra tricky! But we promise, it will all come together for you!

Lightning Lane purchase on My Disney Experience

Individual Lightning Lanes can purchased, in your My Disney Experience app, as a per person, per ride add on – for each ride offered.

Those rides are: (Subject to change)

  • Magic Kingdom – TRON and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
  • Epcot – Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind
  • Hollywood Studios – Rise of the Resistance
  • Animal Kingdom – Flight of Passage

Guests of Walt Disney World hotels can purchase Individual Lightning Lanes at 7:00 am. All other guests can make a selection at the official park opening time.  Just one more reason guests should stay at one of Disney Worlds many resorts.

Prices change based on park and date attending.

Virtual Queue

Virtual queue is another way to ride some attractions. Everyone can join a virtual queue at 7:00 am or 1:00 pm, but you can’t join both times for the same attraction.Virtual Queue on My Disney Experience account

Joining the virtual queue at 7:00 am maybe done from anywhere. To join the 1:00 pm virtual queue, you must be scanned into that park to join the queue.

Once your group is called for the queue, you will be able to get in line for that attraction. You have a one hour window to return to the attraction to ride.

Current attractions that have Virtual Queue:

Please note: These rides do not offer a regular standby line at this time. The only way to ride these attractions is with virtual queue or purchase an Individual Lightning Lane.  Subject to change.

  • Tron at Magic Kingdom
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind at Epcot.

Tips for Success:

Always set an alarm on your phone for the time you can pick another Genie+ selection! The app tells you exactly what time you can choose the next one.

Check the app each time you scan in for a ride in case you can select a new ride.

Parades & Other Entertainment

Magic Kingdom offers much more than attractions to fill your magical day.  Their offerings change from time to time and some are seasonal but include performances on Main Street with the Dapper Dans, Let the Magic Begin, park opening stage show, the Main Street Philharmonic and more.  Entertwine these entertainment options into your Magic Kingdom plan for the perfect Magic Kingdom day. Festival of Fantasy Parade at Magic Kingdom

Daily you should plan to see The Festival of Fantasy Parade, typically at 3:00 pm and nightly fireworks show, Happily Ever After.  Fireworks show times change by season.  All times can be found in your My Disney Experience app or on a paper map as you enter the park.

Plan to arrive for the parade and fireworks an hour beforehand for the best views adding them to the above touring plan as the time fits in.

In 2016, the blog grew into a travel agency, and Love of the Magic Vacations was born. With a team of nearly 20, we spend our days creating family vacations around the world. What started as a blog is now a full service, worldwide vacation destination planning service. I create custom itineraries for each of my clients that not only meets but exceeds expectations. There is no greater gift than making memories while sharing the world and its cultures with your kids.
