Jamie’s Destination “Do”s and “Don’t”s: Xcaret Resorts, Mexico

Welcome Back to our Friday Blog Series: Jamie’s Destination “Do”s and “Don’t”s, where our favorite Travel Planning Aficionado shares her wealth of knowledge and experiences about traveling the world! After every trip to a new destination, Jamie gives us her perspective as both a traveler, and a travel advisor, through a quick but comprehensive list of what to do or not do at each vacation location!

As many of you who follow along know, Jamie’s 2024 vacations began with a few cruise vacations on one of her favorite cruise lines, Virgin Voyages. Since Jamie, and many members of the Love of the Magic Vacations Team have been on multiple Virgin Voyages Cruises, we already have multiple “Do”s and “Don’t”s for Virgin Voyages, which you can find here, and here.

If you do keep up with some of our blogs and emails, you also may have noticed that much of the focus lately has been on Mexico, from February’s Inspiring Itinerary, to the Myriad of Mexican Resorts, and there will be another Mexico themed blog featuring a certain location spotlighted on The Bachelor (can you guess what it is?).

Mexico is always a popular destination, especially for American travelers, but it happens to be a super hot destination right now. Even though Jamie is well-versed in travel throughout Mexico, revisiting a familiar and well-loved destination was exactly what Jamie and her family chose for their Spring Break this year.

Mexico Resort

Jamie’s resort of choice for her latest vacation to Mexico? None other than Hoteles Xcaret Mexico, which was the “moderate” level resort featured in our Myriad of Mexican Resorts blog last month. Spoiler Alert: it did NOT disappoint!

So Let’s Get Going to Mexico! But First…

Jamie’s “Do”s and “Don’t”s for Xcaret!

Top Favorites, and Jamie’s “Must Do” Experiences

Jamie in Mexico

  1. DO Choose Xcaret for the Adventures!

While the Xcaret Resorts are worth staying at for how fantastic the hotels themselves are, a major draw of choosing Xcaret is the access to the Adventure Parks that come with your stay! From exploring natural wonders like cenotes and local sea life, to zip lining across the canopy of the rainforest, the Parks have something for everyone, whether you’re an avid thrill seeker, or prefer adventures of a more tame variety.

  1. DO Make Time to Relax

And speaking of more tame…even with a myriad of adventures available to you, make sure you plan in some relaxation time! It’s the same advice we at Love of the Magic Vacations give for Disney vacations: if you don’t actually plan in time to relax, it probably won’t happen because you’ll be too busy and excited bouncing from adventure to adventure! While trying new things is definitely part of the fun of traveling, a vacation should also include some downtime as well, so pencil in a day (at least!) of lounging pool or beach-side to enjoy what the resort itself has to offer!

  1. DO Purchase the Photo Package

Again, just like with the Memory Maker Package at Disney, having a way to capture your memories that doesn’t require YOU to always be the one behind the lens (and therefore missing in most of the pictures) is priceless! And also like Disney, there are so many photo opportunities at the Parks that the price of the Photo Package is absolutely worth every penny, especially for those adventures that would be impossible to get photos of without someone else taking them!

  1. DO Make Park and Experience Reservations In Advance

If it’s not clear yet, a side note for Xcaret is that it’s a fabulous option for anyone who loves the experience of Disney with its Parks, luxury accommodations and convenience of everything in one place, but who also wants to experience other locations in the world, too! Xcaret offers a luxury resort experience with adventure Parks, just like Disney, but along with that comes the need to make reservations for the activities you really don’t want to miss in advance. Your favorite Love of the Magic Vacations Travel Advisor will be able to answer any questions you have about reservations, as always!

  1. DO Skip the Dinner Theatre Show

Sounds crazy coming from a Theatre Mom like Jamie, but honestly, that’s all the more reason to trust her opinion! The Dinner Theatre Show at Xcaret is just one of the dining and entertainment options at the resort, and both the food and the entertainment are higher quality at other locations throughout the Resort.

Top “Must-Don’t”s, or Things Jamie Would Do Differently

Jamie in Mexico

  1. DON’T Skip the Cenote Tour

Cenotes (natural subterranean chambers with accessible water, or in other words, those cool natural underground pools everyone wants to swim in) are some of the most beautiful natural wonders to experience in Mexico, and some of the most popular excursions, too. When you stay at an Xcaret Hotel, a Cenote tour is included with your stay, and you don’t want to miss it! Over the course of the 8 hour tour, you’ll experience 7 cenotes, and when I say experience, I don’t just mean see them, you’ll kayak through, rappel down into, zip line across, and swim in the cenotes. Seriously, do not miss this tour.

  1. DON’T Lose Your Bracelet

And we’re back to Disney similarities! If you’re used to MagicBands then you know what it means to wear a bracelet and KEEP IT ON without losing it! But even in Disney, if you do lose it, you can get another one without spending a small fortune (especially if you tell your kids they only get the fun character designed Bands to start, and if they lose it, they only get a plain replacement); at Xcaret, if you lose your bracelet, you’ll owe the Hotel $150 before you leave. Jamie may know this tidbit of information from personal experience (but don’t tell her I told you).

Mexico Resort

  1. DON’T Miss the Mercado

Mercado de la Merced is sort of a Mexican buffet, but way, way better than whatever you’re picturing when you hear the word buffet. It’s more like ten tasting stations filled with authentic and traditional Mexican cuisine, all curated by the executive chef. Trust Jamie: it will be the best buffet you’ve ever been to. So, when you’re making your dining choices, remember: skip the dinner/theatre show, but definitely DON’T skip the Mercado!

Mexico Resort

  1. DON’T Wait to Book

Like pretty much everything in the Travel World right now, Xcaret operates according to dynamic pricing, meaning that prices increase as availability decreases, not the other way around. The best deals during dynamic pricing are found the furthest ahead of whenever you want to travel, as soon as dates and availability are released. So, if visiting a luxury Resort with its own Adventure Parks in Mexico is something you’re thinking about, don’t wait to reach out to your favorite LOTMV Travel Advisor to book your stay at Xcaret. Believe it or not, next Spring Break and even next summer are booking now at the best price points, so plan as far in advance as you can!

  1. DON’T Overlook Xcaret for an Adults-Only Vacation

Xcaret encompasses a group of Hotels and Adventure Parks, and truly offers something for everyone. While Hotel Xcaret Mexico is fully family friendly, the other two hotels have age restrictions; Hotel Xcaret Arte is for guests 16 and older, and La Casa de la Playa is completely Adults-Only. If you are looking for a vacation without young children, or a fully Adults-Only experience, DON’T pass over Xcaret; you’d be missing out on incredible luxury accommodations and thrilling Adventure Parks!

And…that’s a wrap of Jamie’s Destination “Do”s and “Don’t”s for Hoteles Xcaret, Mexico!
